María de la Cruz (Maricruz) Olivares is a poor, illiterate girl who lives in the countryside with her grandfather, Maximiliano. Despite her extreme poverty, she is remarkably happy. One day, she meets the handsome aviator Octavio Narváez and falls in love with him. Upon meeting Maricruz, Octavio feels affection and compassion for her poverty and illiteracy, but his sister-in-law, the terrible and wicked Lucía Santibáñez de Narváez, hates her from the moment she meets her.
